I barely remember when was the last time I read novels. Actually I bought this book when I was doing research at Coimbra. It was difficult for me to find cheap books in English there. One day, I dropped at a bookshop located in a train station at Porto and found some English novels on sale. I thought it was a pretty good deal so I just grabbed some books that I hoped could kill my boredom on weekends and this is one of them. Back at that time, I didn't get the chance to finish reading this book until recently I decided to 'escape' for awhile from academia world, and also considering my new year revolution to read different kinds of books, by choosing this novel as a kickstart. While reading this novel, I could say that I felt my adrenaline was kept pumping and my heartbeat gone wild. The story was about an attorney named Mickey Haller who got divorced twice, first ex-wife was a district attorney called Maggie and from this marriage he got a child named Halley, and second ex-wife was his assistant named Lorna. The main storyline is about Mick defending a guy named Louis Ross Roulet, accused of trying to brutally kill a prostitute named Regina Campo. It's Mick common practice to not figuring out the person he's defending whether he/she was doing the crime or not. He thought that would be easier for him to do his job. The story goes packed with conflicts (in my imagination of course :P) when Mick started to realize the similarity of the bruises and cuts between Regina Campo's and Martha Renteria's, his previous case of defending a guy that accused of killing Martha Renteria who also a prostitute. Now he crossed his common practice and asked for help from his private investigator who also a friend of him named Raul Levin, to solve the puzzle together. By crossing his line, he didn't realized that he'd put himself and his daughter's life in danger. He was left with no choice but to solve the puzzle by himself when his friend Raul was killed by the devil. It was a nightmare of his life. Being a lawyer to a guy who killed his friend and the same guy who made an innocent man in jail for being accused of killing Martha Renteria. He's not just a killer, but a serial one. It was started to be more exciting when Louis found out that Mick knew he's the devil. With the police putting Mick as a major suspect of killing his friend because of the bullet found was believed to come from a type of gun which registered as Mick's. Threatened by Louis who stole the gun from Mick's house, used it to kill Raul, and kept it with him so it will look like Mick was planting/hiding the evidence from the police, Mick had to keep working as a defendant attorney of Louis. With some arrangements, Mick made this hearing as a plan to prove his innocence and also to send some signals that Louis is the guy that the police are looking for. Mick won the case and made Louis caught of a previous murder case. But it wasn't as easy as Mick had thought. Turned out Louis was released due to unfruitful interrogation by the police and that made Mick remembered Louis' last word "You can't protect everybody.". Will he and his daughter who is under the custody of his 1st ex wife survive from being killed by Louis? I'll leave it for you readers to figure out yourselves. Happy reading ! p.s. I heard that this book had been filmed back in 2011.
